Description

Energy System Needs: Application and Integration in Sport presents a practical, science-driven system for designing sport-specific conditioning programs through the lens of bioenergetics. Rather than using conceptualized training models, the presentation provides real-world understanding of how bioenergetic principles are applied, using Southern Methodist University’s soccer athletes as the case study. You’ll learn more about the selection of conditioning tests based on constraints all trainers face, including coach preferences and priorities, athlete availability, and competitive demands. You’ll examine how test results shape off-season, preseason, and in-season programming and find out how to integrate player load data, such as seasonal demand and recovery needs, to refine training into programs that are both effective and sustainable. You’ll gain the tools you need to immediately apply energy system profiling to your own sport environment, driving periodization, intensity selection, and recovery planning to exactly match your athlete and produce success.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the roles of the ATP-CP, glycolytic, and oxidative energy systems and identify their contributions to sport performance across different durations and intensities.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate conditioning tests (e.g., 30-15 IFT, Yo-Yo, beep test) based on sport demands, athlete characteristics, and available resources.
  • Apply test results and training principles to design effective in-season and off-season conditioning programs for athletes.

Audiences

Certified strength and conditioning professionals, coaches, athletic performance staff, personal trainers, and other professionals working with competitive athletes.

About the Presenter

  • Peter Kenn

Peter Kenn, MS, CSCS, is an experienced strength and conditioning coach and the current director of Olympic sport performance at Southern Methodist University. With a deep understanding of bioenergetics, Kenn designs conditioning sessions that precisely match the energy system demands of each sport and training goal. His approach blends science-driven planning with practical coaching insight, ensuring athletes develop the specific metabolic capacity needed for peak performance. By integrating periodization, sport-specific intensity profiles, and recovery strategies, Kenn creates programs that maximize adaptation, leading to measurable improvements in both game-day performance and long-term athletic development.
